Process Breakdown
I created this market analysis to better understand how a major game publisher like 2K can market an annual franchise in a highly competitive market. I chose NBA 2K27 from their major 2026 game releases because, culturally, the 2K franchise holds significant weight with consumers. It was an interesting case study for examining how a recognizable franchise can maintain relevance year after year. Thus, birthing the question that became the foundation for the strategic direction of the project:
Why should someone who already owns the game care about it again?
I started by establishing the broader market context before looking specifically at NBA 2K27. I researched the size and direction of the global games market, consumer spending trends, the sports-game landscape, and T2's financial performance.
Then, I connected the research to marketing questions:
1. What makes players return?
2. What makes an annual release feel worth upgrading to?
3. How can 2K remain culturally relevant between launches?
4. How can monetization support engagement without becoming a source of friction?
From there, I narrowed the research into six areas:
1. Market & Business Context
2. Audience Segmentation
3. Competitive Landscape
4. Marketing Strategy
5. Player Reception
6. Strategic Action
I designed the presentation to feel closer to a gaming brand strategy deck than a generic corporate presentation. To do that, I created:
1. Large, witty headlines to communicate one strategic idea at a time
2. Data callouts to make important numbers immediately scannable
3. Dark backgrounds with red & blue accents to connect the deck to the 2K visual world
4. Short strategic statements alongside the research so the audience could understand why each finding mattered
Conclusively, the research revealed that the same things that make 2K powerful (its scale, familiarity, annual release cycle, and monetization ecosystem) was creating challenges around differentiation, player fatigue, and perceived value.
The project gave me the opportunity to approach a game marketing problem from the perspective of a publisher rather than a designer.
